I think the standard chassis thing would restrict innovation on levels that we currently see in smartphones.
I mean, desktops and their components pretty much look the same as they did 25 years ago. Okay some got bigger (GPUs) and some got smaller (Memory), but it still is the same form factor. Modularity can only be achieved if there's at least one constant. In the world of Smartphones, every other company will hate it if their innovation is restricted to one chassis, one screen size, one phone size. Of course we can say that only Samsung can create modules for its smartphone chassis. Well its not like that in Computers. You essentially are packing 15 brands in components in a Desktop. Yes you do in Mobile phones as well, but modularity would also result in an entire business model change in the industry.
